Abstract

Distributions in the Physical and Engineering Sciences is a comprehensive exposition on analytic methods for solving science and engineering problems. It is written from the unifying viewpoint of distribution theory and enriched with many modern topics that are important for practitioners and researchers. The goal of the books is to give the reader, specialist and non-specialist, useable and modern mathematical tools in their research and analysis.   Volume 2: Linear and Nonlinear Dynamics of Continuous Media continues the multivolume project that endeavors to show how the theory of distributions, also called the theory of generalized functions, can be used by graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering. It contains an analysis of the three basic types of linear partial differential equations—elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic—as well as chapters on first-order nonlinear partial differential equations and conservation laws, and generalized solutions of first-order nonlinear PDEs. Nonlinear wave, growing interface,  and Burger’s equations, KdV equations, and the equations of gas dynamics and porous media are also covered.   The careful explanations, accessible writing style, many illustrations/examples and solutions also make it suitable for use as a self-study reference by anyone seeking greater understanding and proficiency in the problem solving methods presented. The book is ideal for a general scientific and engineering audience, yet it is mathematically precise.   Features ·         Application oriented exposition of distributional (Dirac delta) methods in the theory of  partial differential equations. Abstract formalism is keep to a minimum. ·         Careful and rich selection of examples and problems arising in real-life situations. Complete solutions to all exercises appear at the end of the book. ·         Clear explanations, motivations, and illustration of all necessary mathematical concepts.

Abstract

Multivariate calculus can be understood best by combining geometric insight, intuitive arguments, detailed explanations and mathematical reasoning. This textbook has successfully followed this programme. It additionally provides a solid description of the basic concepts, via familiar examples, which are then tested in technically demanding situations. In this new edition the introductory chapter and two of the chapters on the geometry of surfaces have been revised. Some exercises have been replaced and others provided with expanded solutions. Familiarity with partial derivatives and a course in linear algebra are essential prerequisites for readers of this book. Multivariate Calculus and Geometry is aimed primarily at higher level undergraduates in the mathematical sciences. The inclusion of many practical examples involving problems of several variables will appeal to mathematics, science and engineering students.

Abstract

This book teaches the art of writing mathematics, an essential -and difficult- skill for any mathematics student.   The book begins with an informal introduction on basic writing principles and a review of the essential dictionary for mathematics. Writing techniques are developed gradually, from the small to the large: words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, to end with short compositions. These may represent the introduction of a concept, the abstract of a presentation or the proof of a theorem. Along the way the student will learn how to establish a coherent notation, mix words and symbols effectively, write neat formulae, and structure a definition.   Some elements of logic and all common methods of proofs are featured, including various versions of induction and existence proofs. The book concludes with advice on specific aspects of thesis writing (choosing of a title, composing an abstract, compiling a bibliography) illustrated by large number of real-life examples. Many exercises are included; over 150 of them have complete solutions, to facilitate self-study.   Mathematical Writing will be of interest to all mathematics students who want to raise the quality of their coursework, reports, exams, and dissertations.

Abstract

Vladimir Maz'ya (born 1937) is an outstanding mathematician who systematically made fundamental contributions to a wide array of areas in mathematical analysis and in the theory of partial differential equations. In this fascinating book he describes the first thirty years of his life in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). He starts with the story of his family, speaks about his childhood, the high school and university years, and recalls his formative years as a mathematician. Behind the author's personal recollections, with his own joys, sorrows and hopes, one sees a vivid picture of those times in the former Sovjet Union. He speaks warmly about his friends, both outside and inside the world of mathematics, about discovering his passion for mathematics and his early achievements, and about a number of mathematicians who influenced his professional life. The book is written in a highly readable and inviting style, spiced with the occasional touch of humor.

Abstract

The book records the essential discoveries of mathematical and computational scientists in chronological order, following the birth of ideas on the basis of prior ideas ad infinitum. The authors document the winding path of mathematical scholarship throughout history, and most importantly, the thought process of each individual that resulted in the mastery of their subject. The book implicitly addresses the nature and character of every scientist as one tries to understand their visible actions in both adverse and congenial environments. The authors hope that this will enable the reader to understand their mode of thinking, and perhaps even to emulate their virtues in life. … presents a picture of mathematics as a creation of the human imagination. … brings the history of mathematics to life by describing the contributions of the world’s greatest mathematicians. —Rex F. Gandy, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, TAMUK   It starts with the explanation and history of numbers, arithmetic, geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and follows by describing highlights of  contributions of nearly 500 creators of mathematics back to Krishna Dwaipayana or Sage Veda Vyasa born in 3374 BC to a recent Field medalist Terence Chi–Shen Tao born in 1975. —Anthony To-Ming Lau, Ex-President, Canadian Mathematical Society   …authors explain what mathematics, mathematical science, mathematical proof, computational science, and computational proofs are. …book is strongly recommendable to mathematicians or non-mathematicians and teachers or students in order to enhance their mathematical knowledge or ability. —Sehie Park, Ex-President, Korean Mathematical Society.

Abstract

Paola Gloria Ferrario develops and investigates several methods of nonparametric local variance estimation. The first two methods use regression estimations (plug-in), achieving least squares estimates as well as local averaging estimates (partitioning or kernel type). Furthermore, the author uses a partitioning method for the estimation of the local variance based on first and second nearest neighbors (instead of regression estimation). Approaching specific problems of application fields, all the results are extended and generalised to the case where only censored observations are available. Further, simulations have been executed comparing the performance of two different estimators (R-Code available!). As a possible application of the given theory the author proposes a survival analysis of patients who are treated for a specific illness.   Contents ·         Least Squares Estimation of the Local Variance via Plug-In ·         Local Averaging Estimation of the Local Variance via Plug-In ·         Partitioning Estimation of the Local Variance via Nearest Neighbors ·         Estimation of the Local Variance under Censored Observations     Target Groups ·         Researchers and graduate students in the fields of mathematics and statistics ·         Practitioners in the fields of medicine, reliability, finance, and insurance     Author Paola Gloria Ferrario received her doctorate degree (doctor rerum naturalium) from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 2012, after having studied Mathematical Engineering at the Polytechnic of Milano, Italy. She taught mathematics to students of economics at University of Hohenheim and now works as a researcher at the University of Lübeck, Germany.

Abstract

This book illustrates the wide range of research subjects developed by the Italian research group in harmonic analysis, originally started by Alessandro Figà-Talamanca, to whom it is dedicated in the occasion of his retirement. In particular, it outlines some of the impressive ramifications of the mathematical developments that began when Figà-Talamanca brought the study of harmonic analysis to Italy; the research group that he nurtured has now expanded to cover many areas. Therefore the book is addressed not only to experts in harmonic analysis, summability of Fourier series and singular integrals, but also in potential theory, symmetric spaces, analysis and partial differential equations on Riemannian manifolds, analysis on graphs, trees, buildings and discrete groups, Lie groups and Lie algebras, and even in far-reaching applications as for instance cellular automata and signal processing (low-discrepancy sampling, Gaussian noise).

Abstract

Since 2001 the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa has organized the "Colloquio De Giorgi", a series of colloquium talks named after Ennio De Giorgi. The Colloquio is addressed to a general mathematical audience, and especially meant to attract graduate students and advanced undergraduate students. The lectures are intended to be not too technical, in fields of wide interest. They must provide an overview of the general topic, possibly in a historical perspective, together with a description of more recent progress. The idea of collecting the materials from these lectures and publishing them in annual volumes came out recently, as a recognition of their intrinsic mathematical interest, and also with the aim of preserving memory of these events.
